Community Safety Meeting - April 29, 2026
Event: Community Safety Meeting
When: April 29th at 6:30 pm
Where: St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church (579 Parkdale Ave @ Sherwood Drive)
Join us on April 29th for a Community Safety Meeting hosted by the Civic Hospital Neighbourhood Association (CHNA). The meeting is open to all CHNA members as well as your neighbours in the Civic Hospital area (i.e. 417 to the North, Trillium path to the east, Carling to the South, and Island Park to the West).
This evening is your opportunity to learn about the community safety and well-being supports available to help prevent crime as well as the best ways to respond when issues happen. Following some brief presentations, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any safety concerns you have. Councillor Leiper will be in attendance along with Ottawa Police Services and a representative from the newly expanded ANCHOR program, that now includes the Civic Hospital neighbourhood in its boundaries.

Built Heritage and Health Care:
A new future for a century-old Civic Hospital and its Nurses’ Residence- April 20, 2026
Event: Built Heritage and Health Care: A new future for a century-old Civic Hospital and its Nurses’ Residence
When: April 20th at 6:30 pm
Where: Kitchissippi United Church (630 Island Park Drive, Ottawa, ON)
Parking Note: Parking is limited at the church, so the Royal Ottawa has graciously offered the use of their nearby staff lot. Please refer to the map below on how to access the Royal’s parking lot (via the hospital’s Carling entrance or via Merivale Drive). The lot is NOT available directly from Island Park Drive. The map also indicates footpaths along Byng Drive that then lead you safely from the lot to the church door.
With the advent of the new Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, the future of the historic 1924 Civic Hospital building and former Nurses’ Residence – now the Parkdale Clinic – remains unclear. Action is needed if there is to be any conservation and future reuse of these landmark buildings that have helped shape the growth of our city and have touched the lives of countless Ottawa residents over the last century.
The first half of the evening will feature short presentations by James Powell of The Historical Society of Ottawa, David Jeanes of Heritage Ottawa, and City of Ottawa Heritage Planners. These presentations will discuss the history of the buildings, as well as the process and relevance of having them designated in 2026 under the Ontario Heritage Act to ensure their conservation while continuing to provide critical health care services.
Carleton University students from the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism will also present proposals for repurposing the original Civic Hospital Building and the former Nurses’ Residence. Students' proposals will aim to provide suitable and sustainable future uses for the buildings. Large-scale photos, plans and newspaper clippings of the old buildings and school of nursing artifacts will be available for viewing.
We hope you and your friends will join us and we look forward to seeing you!

Our Events
The CHNA hosts a number of neighbourhood events every year that bring our community together.
Pumpkins in the Park
Our staple event is the Pumpkins in the Park, held every year at Princess Margriet Park (Fairmont). With music, bouncy castle, fire truck (time permitting), pumpkin decorating, hot coffee and face painting, how could we not have had a great event? See how amazing this event was in past years.
Community Yard Sale
The CHNA takes part of the now annual Kitchissippi-wide yard sale in early June. It's a great opportunity to socialize with neighbours and get rid of some stuff following Spring cleaning! Learn more about this event.
History Evenings
Every so often, the History and Heritage Committee will host a history evening where they share their historical findings about our neighbourhoods. Past topics include the Reid Farm, Carling and Parkdale Ave and former residents of Fairmont Ave. Here's an example of a poster for a past history night. You'll find some of the topics presented on the History and Heritage page.
Capital Clean Up
Every Spring the CHNA provides supplies and refreshments for the Capital Clean Up event. Volunteers from our community help keep our Fairmont, Reid, Ev Tremblay Parks and the Ruskin berm on the East side of Hutchison Ave clean and safe for all of us to use. Here are some pictures past clean up efforts by your neighbours.
Other Events
The CHNA holds and participates in many other events. These include plant sales, neighbourhood historical walks with Heritage Ottawa, candidate debates and many more. Follow our Facebook page to see upcoming events.
