Civic Hospital Relocation
The CHNA formed the Civic Hospital Relocation Committee (CHRC) early in the engagement process to focus on the hospital’s new campus and the future of the existing site. This is the single most important development affecting the Civic Hospital neighbourhood in our history and CHNA is actively engaged as the process unfolds. Read past updates from the CHRC.
As the work on the New Campus Development has progressed, the CHRC has been superseded by other committees and formally disbanded May, 2023.

Civic Hospital Emergency Drop Off Expansion
The Ottawa Hospital is working with the Ministry of Health to build an Emergency Department Ambulance Offload and Medicine Transition Unit at the Civic Campus. This 40-bed temporary unit, located in the East parking lot, is being put in place to increase hospital capacity, decrease wait times for patients in Emergency, reduce ambulance offload times, and help with patient flow throughout the hospital. Construction of this unit has already begun and is expected to be completed by the end of year.
The CHNA is working with hospital execs and residents to reduce negative impacts from the construction and ongoing use of this temporary building.

Ottawa Heart Institute Expansion
A huge undertaking that started in 2013 and is coming to completion late in 2020. The CHNA was there every step of the way, ensuring residents were aware of the construction progress and impacts to our neighbourhood were minimal. Find out more here.
Reid Park Redevelopment
The CHNA was involved in the redevelopment of Reid Park that now includes a new playground, beautiful landscaping, a dog run, basketball court and exercise equipment. Part of Reid farm house, which is of historical significance to the establishment of our neighbourhood, has been preserved and historical panels have been installed. See plans and steps taken to beautify one of our neighbourhood parks.
Heritage Inventory Project
In 2019 the City of Ottawa evaluated buildings for design and context and included a number of our neighbourhood homes in their register. Here is some of the information the CHNA gathered on this topic. Find out more and see the list of heritage properties and the register.
Ruskin Park Parking Garage
The CHNA created the Ruskin Park Sub-Committee to oppose the building of a 3 story parking garage on the city owned land at 45 Ruskin Street (currently a surface parking lot opposite the University of Ottawa Heart Institute) and that the City honour the signed agreement currently in place between the hospital, the neighbourhood and the city that would restrict the building of a parking structure on Ruskin Park. In 2016, the City and TOH came to an agreement on a lease for the use of the Ruskin lot. The use will be restricted to a surface lot only and the term is for 10 years with 2 x 5 years options. This timing is consistent with the intent of the "30" year agreement that was signed in late 1995 for a minimum of 30 years. The CHNA desire is that at the end of the lease the land, officially designated as parkland, will be brought back to use as a city park, as was promised by successive City councils. Find out more on the dedicated Facebook page.
40 km Campaign
In 2012, the CHNA launched a campaign to lower the speed limit on some of our streets to 40 km/h due to safety and quality-of life concerns. Over time, the CHNA was successful at lowering the speed on many of our neighbourhood streets. Find out more about this campaign and see the related Facebook page.
The Carling-Preston Public Realm and Mobility Study
In 2013, the City of Ottawa started holding consultations on public realm (streets, parks and open spaces) and mobility issues (moving around by foot, bicycle, car and transit) in the rapidly growing Preston-Carling District. The CHNA evaluated the study and provided input to the City that represented our neighbourhood's interests. Read more about it here.
Near West School Accommodation Review
In 2013-14, the Near West Working Group worked towards providing recommendations to address the capacity issues at Devonshire and Elmdale Public Schools while providing students with local access to programs and balanced enrollments across study area schools. Read more about it here.
