The Ottawa Police have issued the following CRIME ALERT, warning that they are seeing a significant increase in THEFTS FROM VEHICLES in the following areas:  Civic Hospital, Island Park South, Fisher Park, and Hampton Park.

Safety Committee Reminder: Nov. 24, 2015

In light of the recent home break-ins in our area, the CHNA would like to remind residents that by far the best precautionary measure against home burglaries is to keep windows and doors locked and have a Home Safety Inspection done by the Community Police Centre located at 1064 Wellington Street.  For details (including phone numbers to call and other safety measures that can be taken) refer to the Safety Committee file on the CHNA website.

Parkdale Break-in - Nov. 19

Mid morning on Nov. 19, while one of the owners slept, a home in the 700 district of Parkdale Avenue was broken into. The burglar quickly left the home when discovered by the owner, no one was harmed. Police and the K9 unit followed up immediately with a thorough search of the neighbourhood.

If you recall seeing anything that may help in the investigation, please
call 613-236-1222 ext 7300. Also, do ensure you secure your doors and windows today and as an ongoing practice, even in the daytime.  Daytime break-ins while people are often away at work are actually more prevalent than overnight break-ins .

Rash of thefts in vehicles in Ottawa
(Ottawa)— The Ottawa Police Service would like to advise the public on the rash of thefts in vehicles in where suspects are either opening unlocked car doors or breaking windows.  Since October 1, 2015, there have been 488 reported thefts from vehicles throughout the City.  Half of those are within downtown Ottawa.

“Residents are reminded not to leave any valuable items in their vehicle,” said Staff Sergeant Sam Fawaz, Central District Community. “Crimes of opportunity are avoidable by taking simple steps to crime proof yourself.  In short, “if you can see it in your vehicle; the thieves can also see it!””

In the event you notice someone acting suspicious around parked vehicles – for example: looking into cars and checking if they are locked or actually opening the doors – please call police and report it.  Make the right call.<http://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/about-us/call-centre.asp>

Find out more on how to reduce the risk of being the victim of thieves with our Safety and Prevention programs<http://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/safety-and-crime-prevention/Prevent-Theft-From-Vehicles.asp>.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call Ottawa Police's Call Center at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300.   Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa Police app.

September 2015

  • Shed was broken in to in the Sherwood Parkdale area.
  • A person entered a home on Parkdale, while the owners were there!  Please lock your doors even if you are home.

July 5, 2015

A car on Hutchison was rifled through overnight, although nothing appears to have been stolen.  Please, ensure your car doors are LOCKED!

June 27, 2015

A home on Bayswater had their doorbell rung at 11 pm but no one was there.  This could simply be a case of kids out having a bit of fun, but it can also be that criminals are checking to see if you are home, or trying to lure you to the front of the house while they enter your back yard.  If this happens to you, please make a call to the police so they can see if there is a pattern.

June 12, 2015

The Ottawa Police Service Break and Enter Unit has noticed an increase in reports of residential break and enters in which the suspect(s) enter the residence by an unlocked front or rear door, including patio doors.

Residents are reminded to keep their home and car doors locked, even when at home, and to ensure any access point from the garage into the main area of the home is also locked.

As the weather warms up, residents often leave windows open and forget to close them and lock them when not at home. Locking windows is a must for ground floor and second floor windows that are easily accessible by other means, for example the garage roof or fire escape.

The addition of extra security measures for patio doors, such as a security bar or wood stick, will aid in preventing the door from being pried open. Do not leave valuables that may be easily viewed in front of windows or inside doors. We ask that residents always note and report suspicious persons in your neighbourhood.
